Those of you who know my husband well, know that if an activity includes camping then he's on board. He loves sharing his stories of being a Boy Scout, attending Timberline and being a junior leader at camp. He seeks out the scout leaders to sign up as a Merit Badge Counselor and is always jealous when the scouts get back from camping adventures and they have them bear their testimonies in church.
Well, our new ward has made my husband one big HAPPY CAMPER! Jeff got his dream calling yesterday. He has been called as the Varsity Coach in Young Mens and has to plan scout camp. I joked with him about coming home from church and putting on his uniform. (He was 216 this morning...and what 150 when he was in scouts?)
Tuesday night the phone call we received went something like this:
"Good evening Sis. Bodily." We were then asked to speak in Sacrament Meeting. "By the way, I hear your husband likes to go camping."
"Yes he does."
"Does he have any experience with scouting?"
A chuckle on my part, as when packing up to move we have three or four scouting jackets lined up and had to decide which ones to keep and which ones could have a new home at the DI. His walking stick is in the closet and when one of the beads broke...well let's just say it wasn't pretty. And his uniform is hanging in a plastic bag in the spare closet.
"Yes he does."
"Would you have him come to church about 15 minutes early and have a talk with me?"
"Sure."
Well, within the next 24 hours the scouting books had been unpacked. The songbook was open and he was gearing up. He didn't even know what they wanted, although we both had a good idea. So now it's official and he is very happy.
Incidentally, he said last night that, "If I'm feeling okay after surgery we'll stop at BSA and get a new scout shirt." (He wasn't feeling so great. Must've been the anesthesia(sp). Guess we'll do that another day.)
